Book Review: Marie Durand

Simonetta Carr’s Marie Durand beautifully recounts the intriguing story of nineteen-year-old Marie Durand who for the next thirty-eight years serves her Savior faithfully while imprisoned.

The beautiful illustrations, real life portraits, and maps blend seamlessly throughout the story bringing life to the experiences of the French Protestants. The book is targeted for 7-12 year-olds, but I would suggest it for 7-9 year-olds since the vocabulary does not seem challenging enough for older audiences. The simplistic story telling manner familiarizes young readers with an era in French church history that many may not be familiar with.  I appreciate this book’s resources such as the Time Line, Pronunciation Key, and Did You Know sections.

You will enjoy this historically and spiritually uplifting biography.  The illustrations and photographs along with the extras really make for an excellent resource to study this topic.
