Be Imitators

Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Ephesians 5:1

When I first announced the Be Series, I mentioned the importance of looking to the Word of God to know who and how we are to be. And for the Christian, it needs to start and end in the Word of God.

Who are we to be? Imitators of God is the answer. In speech, attitude, action, in everything, we should be imitating God.

Why? Because we are dearly loved children.

He has lavished His love on us--He redeemed us with His blood, forgiving our sins, making us alive in Christ! Therefore, our desire should be to love Him with everything-heart, soul, mind, and strength.

The Bible commands us not to have any other gods before (or besides) Him. When we look to the world for our identity, we are doing just that--having other gods before (or besides) Him.

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyones loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 1 John 2:15

We were not created by the world or for the world. We were created by God for the praise of His glory. So let's not look to the world for ANYTHING.

Don't let the enemy deceive you or your flesh entice you to try to find yourself. You have been found by HIM.

Don't let the enemy lie to you and tell you that you are nothing. You are a dearly loved child of God created to live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Don't try to keep this life, you will only end up loosing it (Luke 17:33). We can only serve one master and imitate him. Who will it be?

Reflection Questions

1. What do my daily choices of how I spend my time reflect who I am imitating?

2. What do my words, actions, and attitudes reflect who I am imitating?

3. What are specific areas I know that I have not been imitating God?

4. What circumstances make it the most difficult to imitate God?

Father, I thank you that in You there is no condemnation for those that are in You living according to the Spirit. Our desire is to walk daily imitating You. We want to deny ourselves, take up our crosses and follow You. Please help us overcome every temptation to conform to this world. Help us to fear You and hate evil. May the love of this world never take up residence in our hearts. We renounce all love of this world and the things of this world. We thank You for the victory in Jesus' Name.
